I’m in the process of booking our honeymoon. The soon to be Mrs. pointed out that there appear to be some pretty sweet roads for driving! Upon seeing the picture below I thought, “Wow! I wonder if any rental companies have a 3 pedal model for rent.” It seems that none of the big companies do, I checked enterprise and avis. So does Oppo know?

UPDATE: Problem solved! There are no manual cars for rent, but there is a motorcycle rental place!!

my brother-in-law wanted to learn and after his first tryin my old WRX i suggested he go try somewhere else before bending all the engine components. after a little searching he found nothing. an occasion like that you should rent an exotic

Super rare unless you are in Europe. Consider less folks can ‘dump the clutch’ and cause serious issues to the rental.

Recommend looking for Paddle Shifters instead!

Leave the US... than yes... in fact in Europe, you will have a hard time finding an Automatic. the only suggestion would be companies that specialize in renting exotic cars. But you'll pay a fortune if you drive more than around the block, and if you want to keep it a couple days you better mortgage the house. If you want to drive it a week, than it's cheaper to just have your own Ferrari flown out for the trip.

Yea, that’s what I figured. I should of thought about the flappy paddles as that’s my current dd anyway. I think a Cadillac ATS is as close as I’m going to get, but I can’t imagine how much it costs to rent a caddy from enterprise.

Automatics in America. Try Europe next time.

Yea that seems to be the case. I thought Hawaii might be different than the continental 48

Yea I pretty much knew that it would be no problem in Europe, and pretty much impossible in the Continental 48, but I figured that we might get lucky in Hawaii. Luxury rental would be an option for maybe part of one day, but we’re not going to the main island so we will probably have a tough time finding an exotic rental place.

Yea I considered an exotic rental for maybe part of a day, but I don’t think there are any exotic rental places on the island that we are going to. Automatic kia rio it is lol

Clutch drops and leaving it at red line. Most autos will change up.

hah, even redlining the rentals overseas and dropping the clutch they don’t really do anything, even in reverse.

Dude dude dude dude....

Don’t forget about car sharing programs like getaround and relayrides. Manuals galore. But perhaps not in Hawaii.

Well, I think the plethora of manuals in Europe is to prevent Americans without the knowledge from enjoying a good drive. Take the train or an overpriced cab. But it is why my friends always have to drag me as I am the only one who can drive there.

One thought, and I have never tried it in the US, so not sure if it would work, is call a dealership and ask if they rent cars. I know in Europe most dealerships will do short term rentals, and it can be a better deal, although less convenient than renting from a rental car. Plus your more likely to know what you are getting. I know many dealers will rent a car to someone that brings in their car for repair, so possible some might do the same to someone visiting the area. Worth the phone call. Plus, since they are local, they may have advice on where you might get a car.

Also seemed like there was a web site similar to Airbnb, where you can rent your car out while you are gone. I could not find it on a quick search, so maybe I am mistaken, but it might be something.

I checked those, there are only 5 cars available through car share/rental programs on the tiny island were going to and they’re all automatic! I’ll keep my eyes peeled though, don’t need to lock it down until summer.

Great idea! I checked car sharing programs (only 5 available cars all automatic lol) I will definitely call a few dealers.

They have plenty of manual transmissions, it just depends where/when you’re looking. edit: Not sure about Hawaii specifically

I tried to sign up for this at one point, but because I hadn’t had my license in my current state for long enough (3 years, I think?) they wanted me to get some sort of driving history from every state I’d had a license in over the past ~5 years. Each state charges for those, and some take 6+ weeks.

Also, why did they change their name from “RelayRides?” That seems to make a whole lot more sense for a (fairly niche) service.

e: and motorcycle rental places freak me out. The amount of gear I’d have to take with, plus the risk of laying down an unfamiliar bike (or at least one you don’t own).... it just makes me uncomfortable, even with insurance.

I sure would love to fly somewhere warm and ride for days, though. Good luck!

Ride share programs are a bust for the island that we are going to. However I will keep looking as a have a few months before I need to lock anything down.

I didn’t really think about gear as far as motos are concerned. I could bring my helmet and jacket, but now that you mention it I don’t think I really feel like messing with all of that on my honeymoon.

FWIW, I got a 2015 Mustang V6 with the 6-speed manual from Budget a few months ago for a business trip...

Good call on the gear. This post inspired me to spend a few minutes fantasizing about riding on my honeymoon, but there’s no way I’m bringing gear.

Get a fun car with an automatic transmission, like a Camaro or Mustang convertible.

I might do that, however after looking at some of the roads I think a smaller car may be more fun. Also rental options are really limited on the island that we are going to.

I think, if anything, Hawaii is more American than the continental US, at least when it comes to vehicles.

We had a guy bring a rental Elise to a club aurocross, that was maybe 6 years ago or so, in the midwest. It was a manual, I think from enterprise or national. Interesting that they rented these. I mean they must have known what people were renting them for, and it wouldn’t be to help your freind move to an apartment across town over the weekend. And yes, it had a clutch.

Haha indeed I could! I’ve got some time to think about it. Once everything is booked I will start making phone calls about a car.

It depends on the city you are going to.

There is an app called turo (used to be called relayrides) where people offer up their own cars for rental. A lot of those cars are manuals. And they are waaaaayyyy cheaper than what you’d find at a rental place. But this is available in only a few cities.

I drove a 335i convertible in San Francisco for $150 a day (that included $50 per day optional insurance). Check out my write-up
